Liverpool win the 2019/2020 Premier League season after Chelsea’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City left the Reds with an unassailable lead.
City had to win to delay Liverpool’s celebrations but a first-half defensive mix-up allowed Christian Pulisic (36) to put Chelsea ahead and, after Kevin De Bruyne’s (55) sublime equalizer, Willian fired home a penalty following Fernandinho’s red card to seal Chelsea’s – and Liverpool’s – triumph.
Liverpool Win Premier League with City 23 points behind them with just seven games to play. City knew they had no way back mathematically.
Pep Guardiola’s back-to-back title winners lost at the end while Chelsea celebrated a win which strengthens their hold on a top-four place.
Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Reaction
“I have no words. It is unbelievable, much more than I thought was possible. Becoming champions with this club is absolutely incredible. This is for Kenny, for Stevie – everyone!
The Manchester City game was really tense, I didn’t want to be involved. It was intense but it is an incredible from my players. What they have done over the last few years in exceptional and it’s a pure joy for me to coach them.
There’s a sense of relief because after the three-month interruption no one knew how the season would come back.
This is for all of the fans.
I hope they celebrate it, it’s all in our hearts and our heads, we do it all together and it’s a joy to do this for the fans.
We are in a bubble. Apart from this [celebration] tonight, we do nothing.
We go to the training ground and then go home, that is all we do. The boys have time together tonight.
It’s difficult out there still for a lot of people but tonight we couldn’t hold back, we had to come together.
It’s very important to celebrate because these moments are unforgettable.
We have pictures from the season and now we have pictures of the celebrations and we will create pictures in the future with the parade with our supporters.
Tonight we have made the best of our situation.”
Pep Guardiola Congratulates Liverpool
The Manchester City boss has given his congratulations through gritted teeth. Didn’t look to enjoy his post-match interview with BT Sport.
Liverpool Fans Celebrate Historic Premier League Title Win For First Time In 30
Pep Guardiola said:
“We played good. In general we played a good game but were punished for our mistakes.
Of course a big congratulations for Liverpool and for their great season. We have five or six weeks and a lot of things left to play for.
We won a lot in the last years and we will try to reduce it. We were not consistent like the previous seasons.
Liverpool after winning the Champions League were confident. They played every game like it was the last game.”
Liverpool Owner John W Henry’s Reaction
Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry has given his thoughts with a lengthy statement on Twitter.
“This was a season for the ages and for the faithful of Liverpool Football Club.
It has been an incredible year of magnificent achievement culminating tonight in capturing the Premier League title.
The world has watched the fierce determination of this club on the field for every single match – the preparation, the resolve and the talent of those who put together perhaps the greatest league performance ever in any country’s history.
This in addition to winning a European championship, a Super Cup and a world championship — the totality of this accomplishment has brought respite and joy to so many in a year filled with so much tragedy.
LFC has made the beautiful game more beautiful than ever.
It is said, ‘We are Liverpool.’
You, the supporters are Liverpool in every sense and you continue to drive the club forward — a historic club making history once again.”
